I really want the avatar, but don't wanna buy the actual merchandise. What should I do? Isn't the only way to get her as a challenger by entering a secret item code or whatever they are called?

Yes, that is the only way to get her as a challenger.
Sometimes there will be people on the Neoboards who are giving away rare item codes so that other people can get the Space Faerie challenger. It's not a frequent occurrence though. Generally, people giving out codes to others pick those with solid weapons and high pet stats over people still training/without weapons.
