I am really out of the loop here, having been gone for about 4 years! I just have one question for starters.
The clothes, how do we know what will go on which Neopet?

They are all listed under Custom Clothes in the database.

If there's a pet species in the name, it can be worn only by that pet. (I think the Grundo Slippers, which are old, is the exception.)
If there is no pet name, it can be worn by any type of pet.
Some older clothes can't be worn at all.
Also, for clothing, look in the Unobtainable special list. There are some clothes that can't be bought or sold and don't have ID numbers. You get them when you pet is painted, morphed or lab zapped into the species/color combination. If your lab rat gets zapped again, the clothes stay behind.

Pets don't necessarily wear things that go in the closet. There are backgrounds and things that go next to them.
If you want to try and see how "dressing" a pet works without spending many Neopoints (and you don't have any wearable items in your SDB), you can buy some wearable items that have been Key Quest prizes. They are very, very, very cheap.

They've been changing the cheap Key Quest prizes for different seasons. As the Christmas stuff has been around for a few weeks, these are also quite cheap.

If I find any other good guides, I'll post them. Other than the obvious (codestones, paint brushes, neggs, map pieces), very few of the items go for more than a few hundred NP anymore.

That's a great site, Nynaeve710.
The one I linked to is just for Key Quest. Even the codestones, neggs and paint brushes that KQ gives away have become cheaper. But the other stuff has gotten REALLY cheap. It's a good way to dabble in customization without spending much.
So many of the books have dropped to under 50 NP that I don't bother to sell them. I save them until I have 8 and then I have all my pets read them.
