No- usually when a pet changes species with the Lab Ray it will change into one of the basic colours, so you'll lose the mutant.
Oh really? That's too bad then. Maybe that's why they made the "Pwned by the Lab" avatar for Neopets that changed species... they lose their neopets original color, but they get the avatar.
