Chemistry for Beginners

I have a question. When I get to a certain point within this game - I follow the instructions but then, end up blowing myself up.
In one of the levels, it says, "we have learned to synthesize (and then is shows 7 red atoms in a row)"
"This molecule is worth 10 points"
When I do the seven red atoms in a row - instead of giving me ten points - it blows up. What am I doing wrong?
