I know this is the obvious, but you said you were new so.. higher the rarity, rarer the item. R99s are the largest rarity that stock so try to learn which they are in the shop you choose to restock in!
Items that have uses seem to be popular - wearable clothes, gourmet foods, stamps etc. always seem to be popular and the higher rarity ones are in demand.
