It really depends on your pet's statistics, and how much you are willing to spend on weapons.

Get some items that defend against water, since it's one of his major attacks. I found my Leaf Shield very helpful.

My pet has 95 hp and strength and defense each over 30 (thanks to the lab ray) and I whopped him pretty easy using two sticky snowballs, scarab ring and obsidian dagger.
