My Avatar Keeps Disappearing

I had two different avatars. One was an open book, one was a surreal picture by artist Rene Magritte. Neither were Neopets images (yes, I read the FAQ).
So...what's the deal?

How big were they? File size and dimensions? The ones here need to be no bigger than 80x80 pixels.

That must be the situation. I'm used to websites auto-resizing to fit the pixel limit.
