wow, thanks everyone for your information. Wow I didn't know they could be zapped at level 49 geez! I'll add that to the edit thanks, could you possiblely tell me around the time this happened, like a year ago, 3 years ago, because my current theory is TNT changed the lab rules within the last previous year or so to make them less strict.
Ha I knew it! You don't just ONLY get basic colors, maybe its just alot more common, again though if you could please tell me when abouts you didn't get a basic color after a species change then that would be so helpful.
Sorry for not updating it, a week after I posted this my tests started comming up, then after my tests I got a new computer, and I spent the next two weeks after that organising the computer and getting used to it. Then after that I just plain forgot about it 
Anywho, I'm editing it right now, expect the full guide within a month.

I'd consider adding the following;
Max + / - for each stat, and level.
What colors are available ONLY from the Lab ray (Excluding Rainbow Pool)

Yikes sorry for not updating, i was working on a survey, but sadly i dont think i ahve the time right now to do the survey, so what I might do is ignore the survey completely now and update it.
The max stat for each thing, thats not really known, so I'll try my best to find this out. Guess its back to the labray logs for me, fortunately for me stats happen more than color and species change.
Sorry for being a broken record, but Ive got one more speech to stress about tongiht and thats it. Tomorrow afternoon the reports are being marked and no more tests for at least 4 weeks. Sorry for being lazy, I only find the interest and time for neopets 2 days a week nowdays, which is kind of the reason why i keep forgetting to update this article when i got spare time

It is completely random, as far as I can tell. Sometimes you'll have changes every few days and other times it'll be months and months before you have a species change.

I'm labbing too, and I've set up Excel (where I'm keeping my lab log) to track how often any given event happens. Although, if any of you know how to use wildcards in the IF function that would be a great help. Anyway so far I haven't gotten any species changing zaps, so I guess either it's pretty rare or that's just the kind of luck I have.
Oh right, recently the lab ray increased my pet's level by 2.
