There's a topic on posting rights here that should answer your first question.

Concerning getting email reminders, underneath the signature at the bottom of every post there's a list of options called "Post Extras". The second one along (looks like a little hand) will subscribe you to a thread. Once you click on it a message will show explaining what happens and telling you how you can have it emailed to you
